Advantages of the MIXACO Drum Mixer: Quick mixing, quick recipe change, short cleaning times.

In principle, the MIXACO drum mixer is a mixer with a drum agitator – but technologically much more advanced than classic tools.

Our drum mixer goes far beyond the function of a conventional drum mixer, which “shakes” a closed drum as a whole, rolls on a rolling belt drum mixer or rotates in a Rhönrad mixer.

It is equipped with advanced mixing tools that can homogenize the most diverse and even complex mixtures. The drums are mixed under air exclusion, moreover, air or dust can also be extracted from the drum during mixing.

The Speedy™ drum mixer is an innovative further development of traditional drum mixers. It is designed for the production of powdered products in particular – from chemical and pharmaceutical raw materials to color pigments, plastics, foodstuffs or other dry mixtures.

The drum mixer is based on the concept of mixing small batches directly in the drum. During the entire work process from weighing, filling and mixing to transport, emptying and storage, the mix remains in the same container. This eliminates the need for time-consuming and costly cleaning.

Our drum mixer blends a wide variety of raw materials into a homogeneous mixture of the highest quality in a very short time:

The MIXACO drum mixer can be ideally integrated into upstream or downstream processes. In addition to drums, individual containers can also be used for mixing by means of adapted clamping or pick-up systems. The drums can be mixed with a filling degree between 14 % and 80 %.

With the MIXACO drum mixer, various mixing processes of homogenization and dispersion are possible. The precise tuning of the technology as well as the control parameters are created by our specialists together with you in a free mixing test.

Mix in 50, 100 or 200 liter stainless steel drums. Besides powders, granules, flakes and pellets, liquids can also be mixed.

Depending on the mixing task, the corresponding die is lowered into the container with the raw materials. Homogenization is particularly gentle. You flexibly specify whether or not temperature has to be added to the mixtures during the mixing process. Afterwards, the barrel can immediately be taken to the next processing station.

The mixing containers are fixed in a solid receptacle below the mixing head.

In terms of applications, our drum mixer goes far beyond the capabilities of a simple agitator and can also perfectly handle demanding mixing tasks:

FAQ. Drum Mixer Knowledge.

What is a drum mixer?

The classic drum mixer, also called a tumbling mixer, works on the principle that a drum is moved or “shaken” as a whole and in a closed state. This could be described as a “tumbling” motion, hence the term “tumbling mixer” for this type of mixer. In contrast, there are drum mixers with an agitator that are inserted into the open drum.

A conventional drum mixer, which moves the drum as a whole container, can be designed in different ways. Often, the simple drum mixers have a kind of gripper arm or drum holder to which the drum is attached and then moved accordingly. In addition, there is the drum mixer type “drum roller mixer”, in which the drums are continuously moved on a roller conveyor.

There are also the so-called “Rhönrad mixers“, which also belong to the wobble mixers, where the barrel is clamped in a Rhönrad construction and is moved or rotated by a circular motion in the Rhönrad.

All these mixers are classic drum mixers, which set a drum in motion as a whole and in a closed state, causing mixing of the material inside.

The disadvantage with these drum mixers is that in principle the “cat in the bag” is shaken and no information about the condition of the raw materials inside is obtained during mixing. For example, it is not possible to measure the temperature, take samples or inspect the mixing movement.

Another major disadvantage is the very limited mixing procedures, as the mixing technique is limited to more or less shaking, rolling or rotating the drums without active mixing tools.

Our Speedy drum mixer is not a classic drum mixer or tumbling mixer in this sense. It uses active mixing tools that are lowered into the drum. So it would most likely fall into the category of barrel mixer, but likewise you could compare hand mixer to food processor. Because of its capabilities, our drum mixer is neither a tumbling mixer nor a drum agitator – it forms its own class of drum mixer.

Our Speedy drum mixer goes beyond the usual definition of drum mixers and, with its superior features and flexible options, opens up new possibilities for mixing smaller quantities of a wide variety of raw materials with high precision and versatility.

Even container mixers could also be called drum mixers in the broadest sense, but this is purely a matter of definition.

What is a tumbling mixer?

Tumbling mixers are mixers that mix the material inside a container by moving the entire, closed container. A tumbling mixer can be so large that it mixes 200 liter drums as a whole, or it can be used as a tabletop device in the laboratory to mix the inside of very small containers by swiveling, shaking or rotating.

The “tumbling”, i.e. the movement of the container, can be achieved by different techniques of the tumbling mixer. The wobbling is probably most evident in the so-called Rhön wheel mixer, in which a container is made to rotate in a wobbling manner.

In addition, roller conveyors can set a container less in a tumbling motion, but in a rolling motion. These roller mixers are also tumbling mixers.

Very often, the third type of tumble mixer, in which a container is gripped and “shaken” as if by a gripper arm, is used for mixing 200-liter drums. Therefore, the term tumble mixer and drum mixer is often used as synonymous, and a Google search for a tumble mixer directly brings up the typical images of drum mixers.

Thereby, the tumbler mixer as a drum mixer can have further different designs, for example, with regard to the type of drum pick-up. There are also drum tumbler mixers that are able to grip, lift and move or shake the drums directly from the floor by means of a tilting movement of the entire mixer.

But tumble mixers are not only available for 200 liter drums, but also for very small containers. For more precise and varied mixing of drum contents, our new Speedy drum mixer offers significantly more options than the classic tumbling mixer. We also refer to our double cone mixer as a tumbling mixer.

What is a barrel agitator?

The drum agitator is also a drum mixer, but it works on a completely different principle than the tumbling mixer.

When mixing with an agitator, the barrel is opened and an agitator is lowered to mix the contents. These agitators can have quite different designs. There are manual drum agitators that are held in a drum by hand – similar to the stirring rod that can be inserted into a drill. Or the agitator is attached to a tripod and lowered into the barrel.

There are also slightly more automated mixers that simplify and speed up the mixing process.

For drum agitators, there are various mixing tools as attachments, for example, spiral, propeller, shafts and others.

In principle, mixing with a drum agitator is rather a rudimentary mixing technique for coarse mixing and for such applications where the mixing process and result do not have to be 100% precise.

For the precise and perfect mixing of even sensitive raw materials, a mixer like the Speedy, equipped with an “agitator 4.0” so to speak, offers far more possibilities for mixing smaller quantities of raw materials in drums or other containers.
